Ford Focus I ignition lock cylinder replacement

When you acquaint yourself with this photo report, there will be little difficulty in replacing the ignition lock cylinder on the Ford Focus I without any professional help.

Replacement of the lock cylinder is carried out with the disconnected battery.

Cylinders are usually sold disassembled in order to select it for the right switch. You can assemble the cylinder in 15-20 minutes. The total repair time is about one and a half or two hours. In this case, 2 methods have been demonstrated, i.e.by means of drilling the lock cylinder and without it, the first method should be used as a last resort.

To repair the ignition lock, you need to remove the steering wheel, so you should take a set of socket heads, a set of torches and a flat-bladed screwdriver, as well as a drill (if required).

1

Take a 8 mm socket head, unscrew four facing screws under the steering column and remove it.

2

Unscrew three screws with a ring wrench in the lower column casing.

3

Use a thin flat-bladed screwdriver to detach two latches of the upper casing.

4

If the lower casing needs to be removed completely, then it is enough to take the upper casing up, since it will be under the dashboard with its lower flexible end and will not interfere. It may occur that the lock breaks down a long way from the house and the steering wheel is locked, then the steering wheel is unlocked if you tap out the lower cover of the ignition lock and remove the spring that presses the steering lock.

6

In order to remove the steering wheel, rotate it by 90 degrees and unscrew two screws in the steering wheel spokes with a 5.5 mm socket wrench.

7

Disconnect the horn button together with the airbag carefully, it is attached to the steering wheel with three clips. Take it aside by disconnecting two connectors.

8

Unscrew the bolt using a 24 mm head.

9

Remove the steering wheel.

10

The casing of the clock spring should be fixed with adhesive tape.

11

Remove the centering bushing using a screwdriver.

12

The next step is to disconnect the ignition lock attached to the lock with two latches.

13

To remove the understeering switches, press the latches in the upper part of them, then disconnect their connectors and put them aside.

14

Take the ring wrench and unscrew the PATS receiver antenna screw from the back of the ignition lock. Then remove it from the body of the cylinder.

15

To remove the clock spring casing, unbend two latches and disconnect the connector.

16

«Empty» steering column.

17

Then drill out the lock cylinder. For lazy people, it is not recommended to drill out the metal stopper of the lock cylinder.

18

Because you can break the lock body. Anyway, the cylinder is supported by a shaped locking ring on the backside.

19

Drill out the cylinder, having noted the drilling point, which is located 3 mm below the keyhole on the line drawn through the center of the lock and perpendicular to the keyhole. Using a drill with a diameter of 3 mm, drill a hole of 4 mm in depth, then drill a hole with a depth of 38 mm using a drill with a diameter of 10 mm. Next, hammer the cylinder carefully, it is necessary that all the pins fall out of their places. Then turn the cylinder core to the position 2 of the ignition lock and press the cylinder stopper using a screwdriver with a thin tip and remove it from the ignition lock.

20

That's all. Installation is carried out in reverse order.

21

Further, a more simple way without drilling the lock cylinder is demonstrated. First of all, open access to the ignition lock and remove the understeering casings.

22

You’ll see a hole with a latch mechanism in the lock. Before you press the lock, turn the switch to the first position. If it does not turn, tap it with a palm or a hammer, because it needs to be turned any way. Herewith, you need to try to rotate the steering wheel slightly, it will probably prevent the lock from unlocking.

23

Having turned the lock, press the latch mechanism.

24

Pull the cylinder with the wrench on and hold the jammed cylinder in hands, then disassemble, clean and repair it.
